That’s a bit of a reprieve for Ellesmere Port which has been awarded the next Astra. A lot of people will have been surprised by that, as the writing appeared to be on the wall. But if EP had gone that would have left GM without a UK vehicle manufacturing plant and the British market is an important one for GM. Also, effectively holding the axe over EP may have wrung more concessions out of the unions. If the case for shutdown was marginal, maybe an improvement in GM’s general situation of late might have helped swing things.
