While the death toll in the recent Christchurch, New Zealand, earthquake continues to rise (154 by Monday evening), tales are now starting to emerge of less tragic effects. Like the couple whose Lexus SUV was crushed by falling debris yet they still managed to drive it 600km (450 miles or so) home to the North Island.

I like the sympathetic approach taken by the Kiwi police. I doubt the jobsworth Plod here in the UK would be so flexible. Never mind you just survived the quake, sir, here's your ticket while we confiscate the car for the crusher and you get the train....
