BMW will be pleased that it has beaten Mercedes-Benz in the race to get locally built cars to the Chinese market. DaimlerChrysler's deal with its Chinese partner Beijing Automotive Industry Corp (which Hyundai isn't terribly happy about) could result in the production of C Class and E Class models sometime in 2005 - if all goes to plan. That gives BMW a fair sized window to really push locally made BMWs (which enjoy big tariff advantages) in China.
