Blog: Dave LeggettBig Three misery

Dave Leggett | 5 September 2003

I must admit to being a little surprised by the US light vehicle market results for August and more especially the extent of the gains for import brands. I thought the indications of a strong market during the month pointed to incentives-fuelled market strength, boosted by the annual clearout of outgoing model year lines. How wrong I was. Import brands posted big gains, yet again. I heard a radio programme the other day in which a commentator predicted that one of the big three would disappear within the next ten years, the Japanese would continue to advance and so on. We keep hearing it and I don't subscribe to the view that all is lost, but Detroit should certainly be a little worried by what is going on in its home market.
