This Intelligence Set includes the latest edition of automotive steering systems, plus supplier profiles for Aisin Seiki, Dana, Mitsubishi Electric, NSK, TRW, Visteon and ZF Lenksysteme.

Since just-auto's last edition of automotive steerings systems was published in November 2008, the outlook for the automotive industry has significantly changed.

Given the current state of the industry, just-auto has completely revised its estimates and forecasts of steering systems' market volumes and values. This report now carries an addendum setting out our revised forecasts based on latest forecasting analysis for passenger car vehicle assembly in North America, Western Europe and Japan from 2005 through to 2016.

In addition, and given the sheer volatility of the global economy at present, we have set out ‘expected’, ‘best-case’ and ‘worst-case’ scenario data applied to the various systems (rack drive EPS, pinion drive EPS, column drive EPS, EPHS, power rack and pinion, manual rack and pinion and recirculating ball). On balance, we believe this will provide readers with a more realistic framework for our component forecasts.

For many years, power steering technology was focused on hydraulic systems but demand is now favouring electric power steering mainly due to fuel consumption and logistical benefits. Electric power steering (EPS) systems effectively eliminate the traditional hydraulic system’s power steering pump, hoses, hydraulic fluid, and drive belt and pulley on the engine.

In an exclusive interview with just-auto, Charlie Cregeur, director, global steering product planning for TRW Automotive’s chassis division, outlined the next generation EPS. He said: “For the next decade, the market will continue to increase fitment of EPS and will strive to have large segment vehicles matching the performance of the lower end B and C segments. OEMs will add more functionality to steering systems through software algorithms that can for example help offset the effects of side-wind forces on the vehicle, suppress some hand-wheel vibrations due to chassis components and enable higher fitment rates of marketable features like park assist.”

In this, the fifth edition of this report, just-auto reviews the key market drivers for automotive steering systems, and updates the market analysis. Following our market overview in Chapter 1, just-auto’s product fitment forecasts in Chapter 2 predict the market (by volume and value) in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific for steering systems by type, i.e. Rack Drive Electric Power Steering; Pinion Drive Electric Power Steering; Column Drive Electric Power Steering; Electrically Powered Hydraulic Steering; Power Rack & Pinion Steering; and Recirculating Ball Systems. Chapter two also provides profiles of the main manufacturers, news on recent activity by the main players in emerging markets, 2007 % market shares of the main OEM suppliers by region and regional % fitment rates by steering systems type.

Chapter 3 reviews recent technical advances, such as TRW's portfolio of intelligent safety systems, such as its long- and medium-range radar, short-range radar, video sensors, steering and roll angle sensors and yaw rate and velocity sensors. According to Peter Lake, TRW’s executive vice president, electro-hydraulic power steering, which the company thought would be “transitonal technology”, is going to be around for the foreseeable future. In an interview with just-auto, Lake said that:“I think you are going to see by-wire...whether it’s a hybrid system that optimises what you can do with 12V or maybe it’ll be 24V. None of us went to 42V because it was too expensive, and didn’t make sense, but 24V might. If we do see very high volumes of electric vehicles, it really depends on what architecture they put on them. Is it going to be 300V or are they going to make 12V or 24V available? We could come up with a hybrid system of electric [brakes] on the rear and hydraulic on the front, or all-electric, but it’s an issue of having that power available. I can see a pull for electro-mechanical braking and so forth but again it will come down to cost.”

The chapter includes Q&As with Charlie Cregeur, director, global steering product planning for TRW Automotive’s chassis division and Salvatore Oliveri, chief technology officer for tedrive Group.

Chapter 4 sets out brief profiles of the major manufactures, namely China Automotive Systems, JTEKT, NSK, Showa, TRW Automotive and ZF Lenksysteme.
