Ignition system technology has taken a number of twists and turns over the past 50 years. In the 1940s and 1950s, the ignition unit consisted of a coil and distributor that delivered the voltage generated by the ignition coil to the ignition plugs. By the early 1980s, the integrated ignition assembly appeared, combining the distributor, ignition coil and driving circuit (igniter).
During the mid-1980s, distributor-less ignition appeared, and by the 1990s, the stick coil began to appear featuring a smaller igniter.
According to Bosch, future design challenges for ignition coils will focus on developing even smaller units, while continuing to meet extremely high insulation and temperature requirements, and incorporating electronic circuits.

Discover more about this changing market from our new Global market review of ignition systems…

In this first edition report just-auto includes exclusive Q&A interviews with senior executives from Bosch and Denso, and reviews the key market drivers for automotive ignitions systems, addressing a number of issues relating to ignition system design, including:

  • Trends to add more electronics.
  • Impact of increasing energy requirements
  • Regional differences in terms of design and technical specifications.
  • What we could expect of tomorrow's ignitions system.

Chapter 1- Introduction

Chapter 2 -Covers market trends, players and shares, plus product fitment forecasts predicting in some detail how market values for ignition coils will evolve in Europe, Japan and North America from 2002 through 2012.

Chapter 3 - Most manufacturers agree with the trend to fit more and more electronics into ignition coils. An auto executive told us: "We have some technology projects which involve us putting more electronics into ignition coils. We expect to reconsider laser investigation technology when the cost has decreased."
This chapter reviews new product developments and innovations in automotive ignition systems.

Chapter 4 - Provides brief profiles of the major manufacturers, namely: Beru, Bosch, Delphi and Denso.
