Hybrid blends petrol V6 and electric motor

Volkswagen's redesigned Touareg large SUV - same size as before but up to 200kg lighter - now includes a petrol-electric hybrid version.

The hybrid combines a a 3.3-litre supercharged V6 developing 333PS and 265 lb ft of torque and an electric motor generating 47 PS, resulting in a total output of 380PS and 428lb ft of torque.

The electric motor can operate independently of the combustion engine so it's a full hybrid. On electric power alone the new model is capable of travelling at speeds of up to 30 mph. Alternatively the electric motor can supplement the V6 engine to provide a useful boost during overtaking manoeuvres and giving accleration from rest to 62 mph (100km/h) in 6.5 seconds and top speed of 149mph.
