Volkswagen exported 115,000 Brazilian-made vehicles last year, an increase of 117 percent over the 53,000 units shipped in 1999, writes Rogério Louro Alves.

Receipts of $US1 billion from cars dispatched to 31 countries made Volkswagen of Brazil the country’s leading vehicle exporter. Mexico alone accounted for 73,765 units or 64 percent.

The Gol is the most popular export model. Last year VW shipped 49,396 units of the car that has also topped Brazilian sales charts for 14 years.
