A survey conducted by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) has concluded that voice recognition is 'a viable alternative' to in-car navigation and telematics, thus reducing the risks they may pose, according to South African news sources (30/11/00). Citing the survey, these local reports say that voice recognition is the key to accessing both the Internet and e-mail when at the wheel, while also able to operate CD changers, navigation units (voice-controlled) and cellular phones (hands-free).
