The slowdown in U.S. vehicle production has hit the country's main lead producer which is cutting output and laying off 225 workers.

Jeffrey Zelms, vice-chairman, president and chief executive of the privately owned lead miner and refiner Doe Run blamed poor market conditions for the cuts.

He said reduced vehicle production was a factor because the main use of lead is in lead-acid automotive batteries.
