Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) will bring the hybrid Prius into the country for sale next week, according to local media reports.

The announcement came despite a market slowdown in the country.

According to local Toyota managers, there is a market for hybrid vehicles in the Philippines.

However, Toyota is likely to ask for incentives from the government to reduce taxes and attempt to get the retail price down.

TMP president Hiroshi Ito has said the Prius is very costly to import.

"The government needs to give incentives," he has said.

Road conditions in the Philippines were also thought to be a factor keeping the Prius away in the past, but Toyota says the new car has evolved and poor roads are no longer an issue.
