Styling of new Toyota sedan has been called a dramatic change for the brand

Toyota said last night it would "debut an all-new US-designed sedan at next week's New York International Auto Show" but provided no further details.

A 'teaser' image was also released.

The automaker has confirmed this is a car it plans to produce, not just a 'concept', but won't say if it is talking about a redesigned Avalon, a Camry-based US-only model larger than the recently redesigned Camry, and now also due for a rework, or if it is planning to enter another niche, as it did with the also US-only, and also Camry-based Venza crossover.

One US media report said dealers who saw a preview of the car last year said Toyota called it the Avalon successor due this autumn while one dealer said the sedan was a dramatic styling change for the brand.

One auto blogger even wondered if Toyota might resurrect the Crown or Cressida nameplates as both have enjoyed some success in the US in the past.
