Survey shows distrust of full autonomous vehicles
New research by Kelley Blue Book (KBB) reveals that Americans are most comfortable with the vehicles currently on the road today, believing that they are significantly safer than models with a higher level of autonomy.
KBB commissioned the national Future Autonomous Vehicle Driver Study to understand current consumer perceptions and misconceptions of autonomous vehicles overall and by each level of autonomy. The survey, conducted by market research firm Vital Findings, found that consumers are torn between the need for safety and the desire for control, with 51% of respondents replying that they prefer to have full control of their vehicle, even if it's not as safe for other drivers, while 49% prefer to have a safer roadway for all, even if that means they have less control over their own vehicle. There are six levels of vehicle autonomy identified by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), from Level 0 (human-only control) to Level 5 (no human driver).
"The industry is talking a lot about self-driving vehicles these days, with multiple automakers and ride share companies throwing their hats in the competition to build and release the first fully autonomous vehicle to consumers," said Karl Brauer, senior analyst for KBB. "Much is still unknown about fully autonomous vehicles, including how they would react in emergency situations, but the lower-level options are gaining steam, with many Americans interested in purchasing vehicles with Level 2 semi-autonomous features. Available today in certain vehicles, these Level 2 features are automated, but the driver must be ready to take control of the vehicle. For these consumers, the biggest purchase barrier is market supply. For tentative buyers, first-hand experience like test drives, short-term leasing or daily rentals will be crucial when making future purchasing decisions. Automakers will need to address hesitant drivers in order to be successful."
According to the survey, awareness of the higher levels of vehicle autonomy is limited, with six out of 10 respondents admitting that they know little or nothing about autonomous vehicles. For half of the survey respondents, the perception of safety and personal comfort with autonomous technology diminished as the level of autonomy increased. When survey respondents were asked to make a choice between the different levels, Level 4 autonomy hits the 'sweet spot' by providing all the benefits of full vehicle autonomy without stripping away the option of driver control. This isn't surprising, considering 80% of respondents believe that people should always have the option to drive themselves, and 64% prefer to be in control of their vehicles. In fact, most consumers (62%) do not think they will live to see a world where all vehicles are fully autonomous.
However, not all Americans are hesitant about the technological future of their automobiles. Respondents in the tech-savvy pre-driving Gen Z (12-15 years old) age range are ready to get on board with autonomy and consider themselves the most educated about autonomous vehicles. The majority (67%) of pre-driving Gen Z respondents believe they will see fully autonomous vehicles in their lifetime. Forty-three percent of pre-driving Gen Z respondents report that they know a lot about autonomous vehicles compared to only 1% of Baby Boomers (51-64 years old). Pre-driving Gen Z are the most comfortable (73%) and feel the safest (79%) among all age groups with the highest level, Level 5 full vehicle autonomy (without human input). Older Millennials (25-34 years old), who have actual purchasing power today, are not far behind, at 44% and 61%, respectively.
A majority of current luxury vehicle owners also report more awareness of the higher levels of autonomy, particularly Level 5 (60%, compared to 39% for the remainder of the surveyed group). Level 4 autonomy and Level 5 autonomy are almost equally appealing to luxury vehicle owners (26% and 25%, respectively), while non-luxury vehicle owners showed the highest interest in Level 4 (30%).
Safer and More Efficient: A majority of Americans (63%) believe that roadways would be safer if autonomous vehicles were standard; however, 37% think that roadways are safer with vehicles operated by people. In addition, 60% of respondents would share their vehicle information for more efficient roadways, while 40% prefer to keep their information private.
Ride Share Customers Are Open to Driverless Rides: Americans lean more toward human drivers rather than self-driving vehicles when ride sharing, with more than half (56%) reporting that they would prefer to use services such as taxis, Uber or Lyft with human drivers, in contrast to 44% who report that they would prefer to use these same services with self-driving vehicles. However, among current ride-sharing users, a little more than half (51%) prefer an autonomously driven vehicle, while just under half (49%) prefer to ride in a human-operated vehicle. Ride-share users are significantly more comfortable letting a vehicle drive them without their control (44%) versus non-ride-share users (34%). With ride-sharing users also more knowledgeable about self-driving vehicles (32% know a lot, versus 8% of non ride-sharers), they feel significantly more comfortable with the technology at Level 4 and Level 5 fully autonomous vehicles, and feel that autonomous vehicles are safer, than respondents that don't ride-share.
Try It to Buy It: Early adopters are convinced by experiencing the autonomous technology for themselves. Those with first-hand experience develop higher opinions of safety and comfort toward Level 5 vehicles and are the most excited to purchase them.
The Best of Both Worlds: On the road to autonomy, interest peaks at Level 4 as it offers the best of both worlds – a fully autonomous vehicle that still provides the option to drive. Level 3 autonomy falls short, with drivers feeling they can't fully relax as they distrust the autonomous technology, while Level 5 autonomy is off-putting because it doesn't offer the option to drive.
The Future is Coming: If vehicles at all levels of autonomy were available by 2020, 59% of consumers would be likely to purchase a Level 3 or higher autonomous vehicle that is capable of driving itself for extended periods of time.
