Subaru of America is recalling 72,000 cars because a simple switch failure will stop the collision mitigation system working.

Affected models are 2015 Legacy made from 10 March, 2014 to 16 April, 2015, Outbacks made from 24 February, 2014 to 16 April, 2015, Imprezas made between 9 September, 2014 to 14 April, 2015, XV Crosstreks made from 16 October, 2014 to 15 April, 2015 and 2016 WRXs made 23 March, 2015, all equipped with the Eyesight Driver Assist System.

If the switch that activates the brake lights fails, the automatic pre-collision braking component of the driver assist system will not function and the vehicle will not react to an obstacle in its path, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will reprogramme the driver assist system.
