CHINA: Shanghai-GM leads passenger car market in January

By | 22 February 2013

Automotive sales in China jumped 46.38% year on year to 2,034,500 units in January 2013. The passenger car market grew 48.68% to 1,725,500 units in the month, while bus and truck sales increased 34.75% to 309,000 units.

However, analysts believe the high growth may be deceptive as certain automakers like Shanghai-Volkswagen "hid" December 2012 sales and added them to January's figure, supposedly to create an impression of a flying start to the new year, according to China Auto Web.

According to data from the China Passenger Car Association, the top 10 passenger car makers in January were:

1. Shanghai-GM: 161,426 units

2. Shanghai-Volkswagen: 160,018 units

3. FAW-Volkswagen: 140,638 units

4. SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW): 137,626 units

5. Beijing-Hyundai: 107,888 units

6. Changan Auto: 100,885 units

7. Dongfeng-Nissan: 76,258 units

8. Geely: 60,453 units

9. Great Wall Motor: 60,035 units

10. Chery: 58,707 units
