Schaeffler Group has launched its variable hydraulic valve control, which will debut on a Fiat MultiAir engine for the Alfa Romeo MiTo range.

The device, known as the UniAir system and developed with Fiat Powertrain, is claimed to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 25%. It will also be used on diesel engines, starting with the Fully Integrated Robotised Engine (FIRE) I4 engine line and a future two cylinder unit.

"The development of the fully variable valve control system to production standard has involved complex mechanics, hydraulics and valve control software," said Schaeffler's Michael Haas.

UniAir is a cam actuated, electro hydraulic valve train system operated by the existing oil circulation system.
