As petrol prices bite, Saab is expanding its Australian line to include diesel versions of the 9-3 models.

The common rail 1.9 litre turbo diesel will be available from January.

Saab will initially offer diesel variants of the 9-3 sedan and wagon, but is also considering the diesel convertible.

The Euro 4-compliant DOHC 1.9TiD engine develops 110 kW and 320 Nm of torque.

Both six-speed automatic and manual transmissions will be offered.

No Australian performance data is yet available but the UK version of the diesel gets 39.2mpg on the EC urban test cycle and 52.3mpg on the combined cycle.
