Renault to build Captur at Brazil's Ayrton Senna plant
Captur is built solely at Valladolid in Spain: production began in February 2013
Despite the continued economic crisis in Brazil, Renault says it will add production of another model at its Aytron Senna plant in São José dos Pinhais. The Captur will become the brand's third SUV to be manufactured in Curitiba.
Making the announcement on a visit to his homeland, CEO Carlos Ghosn also confirmed that the Kwid mini crossover be assembled at Ayrton Senna from 2017. This will be from kits supplied by RNAIPL, the Alliance's plant in Oragadam near Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The third additional model for the Braziian market will be the new generation Koleos, which will be an import. Ghosn did not state whether this will be sourced from DRAC (Dongfeng Renault in Hubei) or Busan (RSM in South Korea).
"With this new product plan, we expect to capture a significant percentage of the fast-growing SUV segment in Brazil," Ghosn said. "With three of our SUV models to be produced in Brazil, our confidence in this market is further confirmed."
The Captur will be produced in São José dos Pinhais from the first half of 2017. It will be manufactured on the same line that currently assembles the Renault Duster, Sandero, Logan, Duster Oroch and Sandero Stepway.
During his visit to the factory, Ghosn insisted that all of Renault's investments announced for the country are being maintained despite the current economic environment. The first spend of BRL1.5bn (USD460.5m) for the 2010-2015 period was completed ahead of schedule, while a pledge of a further BRL500m investment to be made between 2014 and 2019 is on track.
