French car maker Renault is after 4,000 sales in Japan this year, almost 85 percent more than the brand achieved last year.

Renault sold 3,025 vehicles in 1999 but a change of distributor and delays in establishing a strong dealer network reduced volume to just to 2,175 in 2000.

There are 60 Japanese Renault dealers - 50 operated by the Nissan retail chain and 10 by France Motors.

Renault will introduce four models to Japan in 2001, including the updated Clio, four-wheel drive Scenic and the all-new Laguna.
