FRANKFURT SHOW: No rebound till mid-2010 - Toyota

Author: | 15 September 2009

Toyota expects European market share to improve in the second half of the year but doesn't see demand rising before mid-2010.

Toyota Motor Europe head Tadashi Arashima told reporters in Frankfurt for the motor show that "the second part of the year should be much better than the first part in terms of market share."

However, he added, "natural demand will maybe not recover until the second half of 2010."

Arashima said the health of the market next year will depend on whether governments continue to offer 'cash for clunkers' programmes.

TME executive vice president Didier Leroy told AFP the company's share of the European market, including Russia, so far this year was around 4.8 to 4.9%. "A little lower than last year," he said.

Arashima said Toyota expected to sell 80,000 units in Russia this year, a sharp drop from the 200,000 in 2008.

The UK-built Auris hatchback hybrid would reach the west European market in mid-2010.

MARKET SNAPSHOT: Malaysia's new National Automotive Policy (NAP)

Malaysia's automotive industry rallied in the second half of 2009 to exceed forecasts that had already been revised upwards. The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) reported total vehicle sales of 536,905 units in 2009, down 2% year-on-year (y-o-y). However, this was a vast improvement on the MAA's initial expectation of 480,000 units, forecast at the beginning of the year, and even surpassed the revised forecast of 500,000 units reported in July, says the BMI.

just-auto's Frankfurt Motor Show coverage

Given the current auto industry state of play, a slimmed down, eye-on-the-budget, Frankfurt motor show was expected, and so it proved. But, while visitor numbers were estimated off 25% to 750,000, several well-known Japanese brands (not including Mazda, which has long been popular in Germany) stayed away, BMW kept its tent folded and the lavish on-stand hospitality of some previous years was noticeably absent, the show was still the usual sprawl.
