Honda's new Fit (a small hatchback to be known as the Jazz when it reaches Europe and some other export markets) took second place in the Japanese market sales table in July - less than a month after its debut, Kyodo News reported.

Toyota's Corolla retained top spot for the 11th straight month, the report said, citing figures provided by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association.

Toyota sold 26,182 Corollas in July while Honda shifted 16,588 Fits, thanks in part to the newcomer's great popularity amongst young women.

Kyodi News added that Japanese minivan sales continued to grow steadily with Honda's Step WGN taking July's third place with sales of 12,847 units and Toyota's Estima (Previa) fifth place with 12,729 units.
