Indian car market leader Maruti Suzuki sold 56,293 vehicles in December 2008, down 10% year on year.

This included 4,264 export units.

The company had sold 62,515 vehicles in December 2007.

During the month, Maruti Suzuki's sales volume in the domestic A3 segment - its SX4, Esteem and Dzire models rose 98 to 6,524 units.

Maruti sales are expected to be boosted to up to 100,000 export units a year after it recently became an export hub for European Alto models and the Nissan Pixo spin-off. The redesigned Alto is sold as the A-Star in India.
