Two of the 15-strong London taxi fleet in Prishtina

A fleet of 15 London 'black cab' taxis is now plying the streets of the Kosovan capital Prishtina with the taxi company claiming to have been "inundated" with bookings since they arrived early in February.

Elm Group operates the vehicles under the London Taxi Service brand and has already taken over 5,000 bookings.

Prishtina's cabs have until now been standard cars up to 16 years old which cannot seat five people comfortably.  They also don’t match the comfort and privacy that the London Taxi provides with its screen between driver and passengers and an intercom that can be switched off.

Luan Berisha, managing director of Elm Group, said: “We decided to work with the London Taxi Company simply because the TX4 is the best vehicle in its field."

Cab maler LTI’s international market fevelopment director, Matthew Cheyne said: “It has been a rewarding experience working with Elm Group to bring the iconic TX4 to the people in the city of Prishtina.

“It comes as no surprise to us to hear the excellent passenger feedback as LTI purposely manufacturers its taxis to provide a pleasurable experience.”

LTI's manufacturing base is in Coventry in England but the cabs are also now made in China for export to far and middle eastern markets.

The 'London taxi', regardless of maker, has always had to comply with strict 'hackney carriage' rules. There's some interesting background here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackney_carriage. Minicabs are not just sedans in the capital; one of the major operators runs a fleet of about 2,000 current model Ford Galaxys and the Chrysler minivans are also popular - the attraction of these models is six-passenger seating.
