Honda Motor has begun vehicle production at its new Yorii assembly plant on the Saitama complex in Japan.

Honda said the plant, which will build the redesigned Fit/Jazz and Freed minivehicle, was designed under the concept of "producing the world's eco-friendliest products at the world's friendliest plant".

"This people friendly and environmentally responsible [factory] becomes the world's top class energy saving plant through the adoption of [our] most advanced production technologies and establishment of a highly efficient production system," the automaker said in a statement.

The plant has an "advanced and highly efficient production line, including a painting process shortened through the adoption of highly functional painting technology", Honda added.

Planned annual production capacity is 250,000 units, with 2,000 workers.

The third generation Fit is scheduled to go on sale in Japan this September.

With the start of production at Yorii on Tuesday (9 July), all three plants at the Saitama factory complex are now in operation, the automaker said. The other two are the Ogawa engine factory and Sayama assembly which is capable of production of a broad mix of models with small run sizes.
