Flush with the success of its recently launched entry-level Amaze sedan, Honda's Indian unit has fast tracked plans to launch a seven-seater multi purpose vehicle (MPV) to compete with Maruti Suzuki's Ertiga.

The car, based on the same platform as the Amaze, was recently showcased in Indonesia, will be launched there in September, and will reach India early next year, the Hindustan Times reported, noting it would be Honda’s second diesel offering in India.

“We are considering launching the vehicle in India early next year,” said sales and marketing chief Jnaneswar Sen. “India could be the second market after Indonesia to get this car. It will be offered both in petrol and diesel.”

The Ertiga was Maruti’s first MUV and fifth best selling car in India in 2012-13.

Honda’s MPV however is likely to be more expensive. The company has been on a high, ducking the industry trend ofslowdown with a 45% sales increase so far this year. The Amaze accounted for over 18,000 units of the 30,000 total sales.
