UK [updated]: Ford of Britain to source EcoSport from India
Unlike its Peugeot 2008 and Renault Captur rivals, the (FWD) EcoSport can also be ordered with all-wheel drive
A Ford spokesman has told just-auto that the EcoSport for the UK market will be built in India. Versions for LHD European markets will also be sourced from the Maraimalai Nagar (Chennai) plant.
The second generation of this small, Fiesta-based SUV had its global debut in pre-production form at the New Delhi auto expo in January 2012. The vehicle is built in Brazil, and production will soon follow in India, Thailand and China. It was developed at Ford's Camaçari Engineering Center in Brazil's Bahia state.
At a media event in Amsterdam in September 2012, Ford of Europe stated that the little SUV would be sold in the region "within the next 18 months" but until now, it has not announced where the model for EU markets would be manufactured.
The EcoSport went on sale in Mexico (2013 model year), its first market in North America, in January 2013. Mexico has a free trade agreement with Brazil which includes vehicles. Ford is yet to say whether or not sales in the US and/or Canada will follow.
Depending on the market, up to five engines are or will be available for the EcoSport: 1.0-litre EcoBoost (direct injection and turbocharged) three-cylinder petrol, 1.5-litre petrol, 2.0-litre petrol and 1.5-litre TDCi (turbo diesel). The Brazilian market model comes as standard with a 1.6-litre flexfuel engine, while the model for Mexico has the 145hp 2.0-litre engine.
Ford revealed the EcoSport for European markets at the Geneva motor show's first press day, on 5 March. Deliveries are due to follow towards the end of 2013. Depending on the country, Ford of Europe will offer the new model with the choice of the 1.0 EcoBoost and 1.5-litre petrol engines, as well as the 1.5-litre diesel.
Barb Samardzich, Ford of Europe's VP for product development told just-auto at Geneva that both RHD and LHD EcoSports for European markets will be sourced from India.
