Fiat has introduced MultiAir technology on its 1.4-litre petrol engine launched first in the Alfa Romeo MiTo |
Fiat Group is planning to use its variable hydraulic valve control system on diesel engines to help it meet Euro6 emissions legislation.
The technology badged 'Multiair' has so far only been put into production on a petrol engine, specifically its 1.4-litre unit. However the technology, developed in conjunction with Schaeffler Group, is suitable for all turbocharged engines.
Speaking exclusively to just-auto at the UK launch of the engine in the Alfa Romeo Mito, Massimo Fulfaro, the engineer in charge of the Multiair project, said: “Initially we may use it on the 1.6-litre diesel. In diesel the Multiair technology is more about emissions than economy. We could use it to help us meet Euro6 regulations.”
So far, Fiat Group has used Multiair technology in petrol engines to improve performance, emissions and economy.
“The technology is good enough so that we could meet the Euro6 regulations [in diesels] without the need for a particulate filter.”
Doing away with a particulate filter would more than offset the cost of the engine technology, according to Fulfaro. He also hinted that Fiat would use the technology for its large commercial vehicle engines.
He added: “Fiat Group has a two year licence agreement with Schaeffler Group. This will enable us to maintain our lead with this technology.”
Fulfaro said the exact timing for the launch of new models with Multiair would be decided within two months and would also depend on what Fiat and Alfa’s rivals did by way of cleaner engine technology.
