Chinese carmaker Changan is reportedly planning to set up a research and development operation in the English West Midlands.

Local media reports suggest that the R&D facility could be set up at the "Advanced Manufacturing Hub" in Birmingham.

There are, however, thought to be other sites in the running, including one in Coventry.

Changan UK set up a research and development centre, CAUK, in Nottingham Science Park in 2010, where it carries out powertrain design and development work. However, it is understood the firm wants to be closer to automotive firms and suppliers in the West Midlands.

The Birmingham Post newspaper noted that the recent introduction of direct flights from Birmingham Airport to China could be a factor in support of the move.
