GERMANY: BorgWarner's new fan system for Sprinter

BorgWarner says it is to supply an important new engine cooling fan system on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van.
The new electronically controlled Visctronic fan drive is a component for the Euro 5 optimised 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine that is to be used in the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
It says a key element is BorgWarner's 'control logic', which continuously determines the current cooling demands and the actual fan speed required.
A further claimed advantage of the system is the design of the fan blades, which optimally provide the cooling required for the air-conditioning system, thus eliminating the need for additional electric fans.
BorgWarner says the precise speed control also ensures 'greatly enhanced' NVH properties in the revised version of the OM642 engine, which now has improved thermodynamics and a higher power output.
The modular design makes the fan drive suitable for variable installation, according to customer requirements, in cars, SUVs, vans and the mid-size commercial vehicle class.
Production of the new engine started in May and will also be available for other models from the OEM.
The increase in exhaust gas recirculation rates and higher specific engine outputs raise the amount of heat introduced into the coolant to such an extent that the fan plays a key role in dissipating heat through the radiator, BorgWarner says.
