The BMW Group says it is well on its way to a record year as sales increased 22.1% for the month of May.

A total of 147,563 BMW, Mini and Rolls Royce brand vehicles were delivered to customers, compared to 120,850 the previous year. Deliveries for the year to the end of May surged 20.7% to 667,511 vehicles.

Ian Robertson, member of the board of management of BMW AG, responsible for sales and marketing: "This was the most successful May the company has ever reported in sales."

The BMW Group made retail gains across the globe, driven by markets in Germany, USA and China.

In the German market 29,372 BMW Group vehicles were registered in May, up 27.7% for the previous year. 

Sales increased in the US with the delivery of 26,452 vehicles in May compared to 22,092 last year. 

In mainland China, 21,150 customers took delivery of a new BMW Group vehicle, up 51.1% from the previous year.  

Solid double-digit growth was also reported by the Group in all major European markets in May, including Brazil, Russia, India, Korea and Turkey. 

In addition, BMW brand volumes increased by 19% in May to 121,168 vehicles. Sales of BMW brand vehicles were 19.2% higher than the previous year at 555,429 units at the end of May.

The new BMW X3 continued to perform in May with 10,182 units sold, up 132.9% for the previous year and the BMW 5 Series solidified its position as the segment leader with total sales of 26,457 vehicles, compared to 16,186 the previous year.

The MINI brand also had a very successful May. Sales increased to 26,104 vehicles, an increase of 38.5% over the same period last year.
