India’s three wheeler manufacturer Bajaj Auto confirmed it expects to launch a four wheel passenger vehicle in the next year.

The company submitted a draft gazette notification to the law ministry for the new model, codenamed RE60, which is the beginning of the government approval process.

The head of Bajaj’s sales and marketing operations, RC Maheshwari, said he hopes to be able to launch the vehicle on the market either in the fourth quarter of 2013 or the first quarter of 2014.

Bajaj Auto had previously planned to enter the Indian low-cost car market through a joint venture with Renault-Nissan but the partnership was dissolved following disagreements on strategy.

The company also makes a range of motorcycles for which it has a significant sales network across the country.
