Growing aluminium demand from China's automotive sector is expected to reach 1.4 million tons by 2005 and 2.5 million tons by 2010, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, Access Asia reported.

Association statistics show China currently has an annual production capacity of more than four million cars, 13 million motorcycles and components worth $US24 billion.

Based on the assumption of one vehicle requiring 115 kg of aluminium alloy, China's car manufacturers will require around 500,000 tons of alloy this year.
