ArvinMeritor, Inc. (NYSE: ARM - news) announced its Wheels business has been recognized by several OEMs with supplier awards. The business is comprised of two manufacturing facilities -- its worldwide center of expertise in Limeira, Brazil and the North American production facility in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

DaimlerChrysler Corporation recently named ArvinMeritor's Wheels business a Commodity Award winner for 1999. This award recognizes top suppliers at the business level that demonstrated exceptional global performance in 1999. DaimlerChrysler chooses award winners based upon a balanced scorecard which includes various criteria, such as quality, timely delivery and significant synergy savings.

Additionally, DaimlerChrysler awarded Meritor's San Luis Potosi and Limeira facilities with the 1999 Gold Award, which recognizes outstanding performance at a supplier's specific location.

"We are honored that ArvinMeritor was chosen by DaimlerChrysler to receive these prestigious awards," said Terry O'Rourke, president of ArvinMeritor's LVS business. "I am proud of our Wheels business team's efforts to meet and exceed customers expectations. Their performance drives and energizes our dedication to excellence."

General Motors of Brazil also recently recognized Meritor's Wheels business as its leading supplier by awarding them its Supplier of the Year Award for 1999. This represents the first time General Motors has recognized the same supplier in consecutive years.

New contracts awarded by both DaimlerChrysler and General Motors have prompted ArvinMeritor to expand its San Luis Potosi facility. The expansion will double the current manufacturing area to more than 180,000 square feet, enabling the company to significantly grow its presence in the Americas in several new market segments.

The plant expansion will create 150 new jobs on three shifts, an increase from the current workforce of 300.

One of the new market segments the expanded Mexican plant will serve will be full-face, chrome cladded wheels, which provide much greater styling flexibility and offer a more highly-styled, premium appearance compared to conventional base steel wheels. The plant design will also permit production of the full range of steel wheels including drop center, bead-seat attachment and full face wheels.
