US consumers will have to wait a little longer for the 4C

Alfa Romeo's much anticipated return to the US market has been put back to the second quarter of 2014.

It had been expected that Fiat's premium brand would return to the US with the 4C model by the end of this year, according to remarks made by Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne.

"For sure [Alfa Romeo] is coming back this year with the 4C," Marchionne said in January. "We are finalising the car now, so it should be here by the end of the year."

However, a Chrysler spokesman has told Bloomberg that the 4C probably will be available in the US in the second quarter of next year.

The 4C mid-engined Alfa sports car will be manufactured by Maserati at its Modena works.

Maserati is expected to build some 2,500 4Cs a year: 1,000 for Europe, 1,000 for North America and 500 for other markets.
