SPECIAL REPORTS

  • Vehicle Production Capacity
More Stringent Licensing Drives Capacity Boom Inland; Total to Reach 47 Mn in 2015, 52 Mn in 2020

Vehicle production capacity in China reached 27.96 million units in 2011 and is expected to increase to 47.79 million in 2015 and 52.36 million in 2020. Although FOURIN’s estimate for 2015 was 40.94 million units a year ago, another approximately 7 million units were added to capacity expansion plans within the past year, indicating automakers’ stance toward continued facility expansion in order to increase their presence in China. However, these figures are totalized planned capacity volumes of automakers (some estimates by FOURIN are included) based on company PR materials and various media sources as of February 2012. At this stage, it is unclear whether the number of approvals by the central government is actually decreasing despite concerns over overinvestment in the automotive industry. After operating rate rose to 85 percent in 2010, the highest figure in the past ten years, it took a significant tumble to 66 percent in 2011, making the central government, which is concerned about overcapacity, cautious about approving various automakers’ capacity expansion plans.
