General Motors has apparently extended its December 31 deadline to sell its Saab brand while continuing the 'orderly wind-down' process. A Saab spokesman also told just-auto today (30 December) that the firm plans to resume the production of cars from January 11.

An unidentified Dutch billionaire is behind Dutch sportscar maker Spyker's last-ditch bid to buy Saab from General Motors, according to Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet which cited several sources close to the talks.

Last-ditch negotiations to save Saab Automobile continued over the weekend after General Motors on Friday said talks with Spyker had ended and that the brand would be wound down. Spyker said on Sunday it had submitted a renewed offer with a deadline of 5pm EST (10pm GMT) today (21 December) “in the hopes of securing a future for Saab, its employees and the brand - despite the announcement that the winding down of Saab would begin”.

General Motors hasn't exactly covered itself in glory with the example of brand management provided by its stewardship of Saab. That things have got to where they are now is a consequence of a failure to invest and a lack of direction for the premium marque ever since GM first got involved with Saab in 1990, as well as the impact of the crisis for the auto industry this year which left GM with few options.
