RE: UK: Union deal saves 600 Vauxhall jobs
Quote:"This is very good news for Vauxhall's UK operations and is the result of a tremendous team effort between leadership of Unite and [our] management team."
Reports today said Magna and Opel would finally sign a deal - which Chick last week described as a "memorandum of understanding" - next Thursday (15 October).
So start looking for new jobs now comrades. The last 20 years of UK motor industry form a signpost to the future of facilities that pre-date the screwdriver plants. Like Ford, the pull of eastern European, Balkan and Asian potential will surely spell the end for IBC and Ellesmere Port, regardless of product quality and output levels. Cheap land, cheaper labour and Government sweetner deals will ensure that emerging economies will win the day for mass-production facilities. Re-tooling old sites in the UK for major model changes will spell the end of production, regardless of promises.
