RE: UK: Road pricing 'to curb emissions'
Wouldn't it be nice if we had a world class Integrated transport system Where airports had design for purpose train, bus and taxi terminals for slick onward journeys. Where towns had street trains or trams running on clear routes and with change terminals for different routes and taxi ranks for onward journeys. Where we had a system of Logistic companies to organise container shipment via a modern train network, where the only truck journeys would be a short shuttle at either end. Where a journey to work, was a jump on a street train, onto a mainline train and back onto a street train, for relatively seamless comfortable journey, with multi media entertainment, via personal head phones, if desired. The car would still have a place for journeys requiring more flexibility. Vans for short hauling parts and emergency services. What do the government come up with? Lets stop people travelling, by charging them off the road. The alternative is a nightmare in many cases. It wasn't so long ago that there was talk of congestion charge on the railways, to discourage people from travelling at peak times. This isn't a policy, it's avoiding responsibility and failing our society.

Dave Standing has it spot on, fortunately the people making the noises will not be in power long enough to implement their proposals.
