A roster of top General Motors executives, including CEO Dan Akerson, North America head Mark Reuss, global design chief Ed Welburn and Cadillac marketing VP Dan Butler last night (Sunday, 8 January) launched the Cadillac brand's most serious attempt yet to challenge the BMW 3-series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-class: the new-from-the-ground-up ATS sedan/saloon.

CANADA: Magna unit Cosma acquires aluminium castings operations

Cosma International, an operating unit of Magna International, has signed an agreement with the shareholders of the BDW technologies group under which Cosma will acquire BDW's four operations. BDW is a vacuum high-pressure aluminum die caster and expects full year 2011 sales of approximately EUR160m.
GERMANY: BMW details new 3 series

The sixth generation of the BMW 3 series sedan has grown 93mm in length compared to its predecessor, on a wheelbase 50mm longer (2,810mm now) and widened track (front +37 mm, rear +47 mm). It makes its punlic debut at the 2012 Detroit show in January and right hand drive sales start in the UK in February.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Frankfurt Motor Show, ZF's CEO Hans-Georg Härter said that the company has achieved sales revenue growth of 23% so far this year (first eight months versus same period last year).

We learned in the last week, courtesy of IHS Automotive, that four cylinder engines are now most popular in the US, powering 43% of light vehicles sold in the first six months of this year. Six years ago, V6s had that sort of share. Blame high fuel prices and federal bureaucrats' proposed 2016 corporate fuel economy edict. This side of the Atlantic, the new 2012 four-pot XF diesel has its origins, at least partly, with government pen-pushers, in our case at the European Union.

US: Chrysler to spend another $843m on transmissions

Chrysler Group last night confirmed it was looking to invest $843m at its existing transmission manufacturing facilities in Kokomo, Indiana, to accommodate production of a new advanced front-wheel drive automatic transmission. With this announcement, the company’s total investment in US facilities would climb to nearly $3bn since June 2009.

ANALYSIS: ZF’s Saarbrücken plant - gearing up for the future

Over the last 37 years, ZF's transmission plant at Saarbrücken, in Germany, has manufactured a series of planetary automatic transmissions, for use in passenger cars. First came the 3-speed 3HP in 1973, followed by 4-speed 4HP in 1982, the 5-speed 5HP in 1990 and finally the 6-speed 6HP family in 2001. More recently, in 2006, ZF launched second generation versions of the 6HP family, which were more efficient than the first generation. Now Saarbrücken has embarked on the next phase of its life, in which the new 8-speed 8HP family will start to take over, with initial production having started in July of 2009.
