COMMENT: Designing for youth and unexpected consequences

General Motors executives from CEO Dan Akerson to global director of youth strategy, John McFarland, to Chevrolet marketing chief Chris Perry have all been consistently on-message this Detroit show - we are going to listen to young potential buyers, the 18-30 millennials, and we are going to engage them and develop the products that excite passion in them for cars again. Or words to that effect.

US: November gives automakers reason to be thankful

November light vehicle sales gave automakers reason to be thankful. Adjusted results were up 9.5% and November’s seasonally adjusted annualised rate (SAAR) of 13.63m was the highest since August 2009 and the best November since 2007.

US OCTOBER SALES: SAAR of 13.26m highest since February

October US light vehicle sales were up 11.6% compared to the same month in 2010; the seasonally adjusted annualised rate (SAAR) came in at 13.26m on a volume of just over 1m sales. That’s not only better than last October’s 12.18m rate, it’s the highest since February’s 13.29m and the second-highest rate since August 2009.

Hyundai has borrowed the one rear door idea from the defunct Saturn Ion, Mini Clubman et al with a new twist - its new Veloster three-door coupe launched in Detroit yesterday has a front, rather than rear hinged additional side door on the right for easy rear seat access.
US: Honda axes the Element

Honda's US unit has killed off the boxy Element saying 2011 will be its last model year. First introduced in concept form as the Model X at the 2001 Detroit show, the Element was launched in 2002 as a 2003 model and became a favourite of small businesses, outdoor enthusiasts and pet owners. It never quite hit the spot with youthful surfers, as Honda has intended, and was more likely to be seen in the hands of a 40- or 50-something heading home from the big box store.

Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing North America (TEMA) said it had had not found a single case in which the vehicle's electronic throttle control system would lead to unintended acceleration but had nonetheless broadened the scope of its on-site Swift Market Analysis Response Teams (SMART) evaluation process following an 80% drop in complaints of unexpected acceleration since April 2010.
