Vauxhall can’t seem to catch the Focus and Golf but the addition of the new estate is giving the griffin logo brand a strong sales boost, the Astra pulling past the VW Polo in June to become the UK’s sixth best selling model.

A fair number of interesting stories came out of Geneva this week. We learned, for example, that Jeep almost got yanked from the UK market in 2012. And has apparently been saved by the (Fiat-built) Renegade. Volkswagen's little diesel difficulty isn't worrying GM Europe - Opel's boss wants to increase the diesel mix as he also adds a little electrification to the bowl. Even better, after years of losses and not a little restructuring pain (RIP Bochum and Antwerp plants), breakeven is on the cards this year.

Executives' pride in Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port plant having secured the contract to be the lead factory for the new generation Astra was palpable at the UK media launch. It was clear that union flexibility was the key to the British plant getting the nod over the Germans - securing 2,000 automaker and supplier jobs until at least 2020 - and led to Bochum, instead of Ellesmere Port, facing the axe. No more British built Astras would also have meant no more British Vauxhall cars (the former Luton car plant is now a development site) and no more Ellesmere Port.

General Motors Europe boss has told just-auto that the company is off to a strong sales start as it looks to hit breakeven in 2016. In a wide-ranging interview in Geneva, he also said that Opel is looking to address its weakness in SUVs, is concerned about the UK’s currency movements and believes that Opel should focus on efficiency gains for combustion engines - rather than go for hybrids - in meeting tighter CO2 emission rules.

Opel says it will publish WLTP test cycle based fuel consumption numbers, reflecting more everyday driving conditions and it will also implement improved SCR diesel applications in new vehicles – which will lower harmful NOx emissions. The initiatives are voluntary ahead of regulatory changes in Europe.

Opel has announced that William F. Bertagni will take over as Vice President Vehicle Engineering, Europe effective April 1. He will replace Charles Klein who is appointed Executive Director Global CO2 Strategy & Energy Center at General Motors. In 2015 the European car market totalled 14.2m new registrations, an increase of 9.3% over 2014 full year results; the highest since 2009. The market benefited from the last two months of double-digit growth with December setting the highest positive monthly change of the last three years at 1.16m units. Therefore, the last quarter volume increase was the highest of the year, standing at 10.2% more than in Q4 2014, representing 3.42m cars sold in total. The Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate, SAAR, came in at 16.52m units.

Last year, 2015, new car registrations in Europe's Big Five markets passed the 10m units mark, increasing by 8.8% compared to 2014. All five markets posted positive growth with Germany leading the way with 3.2m units, up by 5.6%, although this was the lowest annual increase among the five countries.

European new car sales experienced a 27th consecutive month of growth during November 2015 with volume up 13.5% year on year, the second largest rise this year, according to analysts at JATO Dynamics. A total of 30 car lines sold by GM's joint ventures in China were eligible for the 50% vehicle purchase tax cut from October 1 through the end of 2016. The government reduced the tax levied on new passenger vehicles with engines of 1.6 litres and under to 5% from the previous 10%. GM and its joint ventures have a total 128 trim levels that will benefit from this incentive policy, the automaker said.
