Concerned that the traditional car model segmentation is an outdated means of describing target groups, Johnson Controls Automotive Seating worked with researchers from Concept M institute for market psychology to define a set of more meaningful categories that pinpoint the diverse needs and wants of today’s European drivers. The supplier used a recent press gathering in Berlin to explain its approach, findings and practical relevance to automakers.

The second part of this month’s briefing reviews just some of the supplier autonomous driving innovations that caught our eye in the consumer electronics show (CES) and Detroit auto show this month. While they may not be household names, the likes of Autoliv, Bosch, Continental, Delphi, Denso, Magna, Valeo, Visteon and ZF TRW will heavily influence how your autonomous car will perform. Here, the tech talk is on sensor fusion (critical for self-driving cars), connectivity and vehicle-to-everything. In the meantime, semi-autonomous technologies are becoming more affordable thereby paving the way for mass-vehicle market growth.

Last summer saw the official launch of Yanfeng Automotive Interiors (YFAI), a joint venture between Yanfeng Automotive Trim Systems Co Ltd and Johnson Controls. YFAI has sales revenues of some $8.5 billion, an order backlog of $10 billion and expectations to gain further market share in China and other Asian markets. Its product portfolio includes instrument panels and cockpit systems, door panels, floor consoles and overhead consoles. Matthew Beecham caught up with Han Hendriks, Vice President Advanced Product Development & Sales at YFAI to learn more about the company’s growth prospects.
