Our updates of the auto situation in Tianjin, following the massive explosions in the Chinese port city, have attracted a lot of reader interest this week. I was last week in the middle of a British 'staycation' (it rained, thank you for asking) when news of the disaster broke and watched, appalled, at the war zone-like TV news views of thousands of incinerated cars (many new VW Beetles as it happened; Tainjin being a key auto port of entry for imported models, VW was said to have lost some 2,750 cars) as TV news anchors regularly reported on the increasing, but surprisingly low number of people killed. Tragic.

Tenneco’s advances in exhaust heat recovery technologies include thermoelectric generators (TEGs) and Rankine systems for powering electrical accessories, recharging batteries and supporting vehicle propulsion without reducing engine performance. Tenneco reckons that the same trends that are causing the vehicle powertrain to become electrified are indeed causing its after-treatment systems to become electrified. Philippine sales surge 28% in October, 22% YTD

New vehicle sales in the Philippines rose by 28% to a new monthly high of 28,667 units in October, from 22,278 units in the same month of last year, according to data released jointly by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI) and Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA). The associations’ data does not include sales of some key importers, including Hyundai, Chevrolet and Subaru, which together typically account for around 15% of the total market.

GM builds 250,000th South African Chevrolet ute

September sales by GM and its joint ventures in China declined 3.9% year over year to 295,236 vehicles. But sales were up 18.7% last month versus August, the second month on month increase in a row.


GM ships first batch of LHD Beat to Mexico

General Motors India has shipped the first 3,000 left hand drive Chevrolet Beats to Mexico. The vehicles have left Mumbai and are expected to arrive in Mexico within eight weeks with sales commencing in December 2015.


New Chevrolet Volt to be sold only in 11 states

Chevrolet said its 2016 Volt plug-in hybrid vehicle will be available only in a few US states from autumn. The vehicle will be available in Michigan and other states as a 2017 model from next spring. Earlier, the company had announced wider availability.


Ford Mustang top-seller as RHD production starts

The Ford Mustang was the best-selling sports car worldwide during the first half of the year, independent registration data showed, as right hand drive production began in the US.


GM China sets year to date retail sales record

General Motors and its joint ventures booked record retail sales of 2,197,192 vehicles in China during the first eight months of the year, which was up 2.3% year on year. The increase, the automaker said, was driven by successful new product launches and an improved mix of SUVs and MPVs.


Labor Day shift hits US light vehicle sales

Automakers were reminded of the impact the calendar can have on light vehicle sales here in the US. Labor Day - a key end-of-summer selling day - falls this year on the first Monday  (the 7th) in September. In August 2014, it fell on 1 September but was included in the August sales tally.


Korea domestic sales rise 15% in August

Domestic sales among South Korea’s five main automakers increased by 14.6% to 120,400 units in August, from weak year-earlier sales of 105,085 units, according to data released individually by the vehicle manufacturers and compiled by just-auto.


GM India starts Beat exports to Mexico

General Motors India has built its first Chevrolet Beat for export to Mexico. Vehicle shipments to this second major export market will start this quarter from GM India's Talegaon, Maharashtra factory. Sales of the minicar in Mexico are scheduled to begin in December.
