TEN THINGS: Some facts, figures and tips for the IAA Frankfurt show 2011

1. This year is the 64th International Motor Show (IAA Cars) 2011 in Frankfurt.
2. A total of around 900 exhibitors – including 75 international automotive manufacturers – will be present. The occupied exhibition space covers approx. 210,000 sq m, which is 15,000 sq m more than in 2009.
3. There were over 800,000 show visitors at the last show in 2009 and a similar number are expected this year.
4. The vehicle manufacturers alone will present 89 world premieres in Frankfurt, 45 of them from German firms.
5. The start of the IAA took place more than 110 years ago. In 1897, 8 motor vehicles were exhibited to the public at the Bristol Hotel, Unter den Linden in Berlin. Due to its high visitor and exhibitor turnout, the IAA was developed into a yearly alternating exhibition of passenger cars and commercial vehicles in 1991.
6. The show will be officially opened on 15 September by the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel. This year's show theme: “Future comes as standard”. Glad it's not an optional extra.
7. Open to the public September 15th-25th. Press days (only for accredited journalists): Sep 13 and 14, 2011. Show hours: 9:00am–7:00pm.

9. For the first time the IAA has its own page on Facebook: www.facebook.com/iaapkw. Users can post questions concerning the show and receive the answers via Facebook.
10. IAA Cars Frankfurt alternates with the Paris Show every September (thus the Paris Show was last year and will be held again next year). The big parts show, Automechanika, takes the Messe space at Frankfurt when IAA is not on. The big truck show in Germany is held at the even bigger show grounds of Hannover.
And finally, two tips. If you get physically tired at Frankfurt there are plenty of opportunities in the extensive show grounds to rest and refuel. Beer and a hot-dog (otherwise known as, ahem, a Frankfurter) enjoyed in the open-air on a wooden bench on one of the main showground thoroughfares is a traditional break. Quick and efficient. And secondly, make use of the official courier service to mail stuff back to the office and avoid 'brochure fatigue'.
