The Indian economy, many analysts and observers have said, resembles a mammoth elephant that is trundling along at its own pace. The signs of lethargic progress are apparent in the way several of its industries perform. The automobile industry is no exception. Unlike that of many 'Asian tigers', the performance of India's automotive industry continues to disappoint. Many have concluded that the unpredictable nature of the auto industry's operating environment - a result of unclear policies and excessive bureaucracy - will continue to impair its development.
