BMW Compact: Look ma, no butterfly
The throttle butterfly valve has been the way to control engine speed pretty much since the internal combustion engine was invented. But now BMW's come up with a way to do the job by varying intake valve lift. The new Valvetronic system debuts in the 1.8-litre, four cylinder engine launched with the latest 3-series Compact, writes just-auto.com deputy editor Graeme Roberts.
