Despite its distance from the major automotive markets and decision-making centres, Australia still has a significant - and unique - automotive industry. Large rear wheel cars and their pick-up derivatives (known locally as Ute's) have dominated the market and automotive manufacturing since the industry's inception and these vehicle are as synonymous with Australia as koalas and kangaroos. Despite the trend to small cars, SUVs and other niche vehicles, Australia's commitment to large cars remains strong, although now for front wheel drive vehicles as well as traditional, locally made rear wheel drives.
